Undercover: The True Story of Britain's Secret Police to give the book its full title has been written and researched by two Guardian journalists: Rob Evans and Paul Lewis and the story it tells should be genuinely, shockingly disturbing no matter how cynical you are about what the British state gets up to in your name. It shocked me, and I regard myself as cynical in the extreme.

As the title suggests Population 10 Billion is an in examination of the impact that a global population of 10 billion will have on the planet and how we will have to adapt to cope with it. Before May 2011 the top demographics experts of the United Nations suggested that world population would peak at 9.1 billion in 2100, and then fall to 8.5 billion people by 2150.

Since the publication of his debut novel in 1986 Miami Herald columnist Carl Hiaasen has sometimes been accused of writing the same novel over and over again. Up until 2002’s Basket Case that wasn’t a problem because his stock-in trade of tales about Florida’s lowlifes, ne'er-do-wells, criminals and carpetbaggers and their flawed but righteous opponents always raised a laugh.
